Several of the church leaders contended
for the presidency of the Latter Day Saint Church after the death
of the Joseph Smith Jr. The few Latter Day Saints that chose to remain
in Kirtland, soon found themselves hosting a variety of different
leaders and followings of the Latter Day Saint movement. Sidney Rigdon
led a small group to Pennsylvania, returning to Kirtland for a short
period to once again speak from the temple pulpits in 1845. Followers
of James Strang, James Colin Brewster, Zadoc Brooks, William McLellin
worshipped in the temple from 1845 through the 1860s. Martin
Harris continued to give tours of the temple until 1869. |
