Photo of the Church Hymnal, 1835 Edition. A Collection of Sacred Hymns for the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Emma Hale Smith was responsible for selecting hymns for the first church hymnal, which was published here in Kirtland in 1835. She chose several hymns written by fellow Kirtlanders, including Parley P. Pratt, W. W. Phelps, and Frederick Granger Williams, and a number of hymns from the larger Christian tradition. The last hymn to be included, "The Spirit of God Like a Fire Is Burning," was written by Phelps for the dedication of the temple. The hymnal is 121 pages and measures 4.5" x 3" (11.43 x 7.62 cm).
